Mark Twain is one of the most important writers, comics and commentators of the 19th and 20th centuries. Moreover, he was a quintessential American. Mark Twain not only regaled us with stories, but left behind a legacy of what it meant to be human. Twain understood what it meant to market oneself, and realized that how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us are curious notions.

"When she was good, she was very good. But when she was bad, she made film history." (tcmdb.com)

It should be fairly clear from the large type on my homepage that I am a fan of Mae West. But how do I defend putting a film quote on a graphic design website? There is one big similarity. Separating from the usual and expected.

I've heard this quite a bit from web firms that have an old, ugly, outdated website showcasing their work. The message being "we are too busy making our clients' websites great that we have no time to invest in our own." Being a mechanic in an ex-life, however, I would like to put this myth to rest and take away the excuse for not enjoying your job.

When I was working as a mechanic, I saw two distinct sets of workers: those who decided on this career because they could make a paycheck, and those that truly loved cars. I also saw a very distinct way these mechanics worked.

When I was going through design school I was immediately drawn towards logo design. I recognized how hard it would be to make a great one and how easy it would be to make a passable one. One mantra I heard over and again in school was to keep the logo simple. And I agree with this. However I believe that a logo should be "shown" simply. Not designed so. What makes logos so difficult is that you must make sure you have your concept in there as well. It's hard to fit a concept in a simple design that will be used business card small to billboard size big.

Long before I got into this crazy world of web design and development I was an auto mechanic. Now, you won't find this anywhere on my resume, but every now and then a client will ask about my past and how I got into this field in the first place. I tell them it was because I was a mechanic, which is usually followed by blank stares or doubtful looks. But here's why I loved both:

I recently had the (mis)fortune of installing a Drupal site to a GoDaddy server. I spent hours searching the web and going back and firth with their tech support before it was finally live. I've decided to document the steps so I would have them in the future and share them with anybody else lucky enough to host with GoDaddy.

A long time ago, when the web was still young, designers and developers were stuck with a way to showcase a thumbnail gallery with popup images. New windows were opened; people got lost and upset. Then a developer by the name of Lokesh Dhakar came up with a simple, non-obtrusive script to overlay images on top of the same page. It was sleek, it was stylish and it took the web by storm.

Speaking of Deke, here's a great video he's posted on approaching a difficult mask in Photoshop. Pay attention to Image > Calculations and the final layers blending mode.

    Pure genius Deke!
